Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – In a thrilling display of tennis prowess, Ireland secured a decisive victory against Saudi Arabia in the Davis Cup World Group II Playoffs. The Irish team showcased exceptional skill and determination, clinching the tie with a commanding performance.

The tie commenced with Ireland’s Michael Agwi facing Saudi Arabia’s Saud Alhogbani. Agwi delivered a stellar performance, winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-0, granting Ireland an early lead. Following this, Osgar O’hOisin took on Ammar Faleh Alhogbani., securing another straight-sets victory 6-4, 6-4, further solidifying Ireland’s advantage.

The doubles match proved to be a pivotal point in the tie. Ireland’s David O’Hare & Osgar O’hOisin exhibited seamless coordination and tactical brilliance. Their synergy on the court was evident as they outmanoeuvred the Saudi pair, securing the overall victory for Ireland.

The final singles matches saw Ireland’s Ammar Elamin and Freddy Murray take to the courts. Elamin put in a strong shift against Abdulmajeed Bukhari, keeping control throughout and adding another win to Ireland’s tally. Murray, a senior at UNC Asheville, delivered a dominant performance against Abdulmalek Bursais, winning 6-0, 6-2, and sealing the 5-0 victory for Ireland.

Team Captain, Conor Niland, said of the team’s victory, “We were delighted to get a clean sweep, 5-0 win in Saudi Arabia. The team performed with a lot of composure and managed the tie very well. We look forward to seeing the draw for the next match and will be ready for it in September.

National Performance Development Director, Cian Blake, congratulated the team saying, “Congratulations to Conor and the team on their comprehensive victory in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It was vital to bounce back after the Tunisia tie and the team have done that with a very professional performance. We can now look forward to another big tie in September.“
