Irish Davis Cup star Simon Carr has announced his retirement from professional tennis.
Carr is still only 24 but he has represented Ireland with great success, since making his debut in 2018. More recently however, he has been dealing with injury and while he did recover sufficiently to make the team which took on Austria in the recent Davis cup match in Limerick, he did not play in any of the rubbers.
Carr turned pro in 2015, when only 15. He first played for Ireland in 2018, and his Davis Cup record since was an impressive 9/5 singles win loss ratio and an overall 12/8 one. He was instrumental in Ireland securing promotion to the World Group II playoffs in 2022.
On the pro circuit, Simon won 1 singles and 4 doubles titles, the most recent in January 2024. His career high, which he reached in 2020, was 512.
He also made his mark as a junior, competing in all 4 Grand Slams in 2017, and reaching a ranking high of 42.
Speaking as news of Simon’s retirement broke, Kevin Quinn, Tennis Ireland’s CEO said: ‘We are sad to see Simon finish up, but very grateful for all he did for Irish Tennis. Going on the circuit at 15 is not easy, but he showed huge drive and determination as he climbed the world rankings and he always represented us with distinction. We wish him all the best for his future and hope that Tennis and indeed Tennis in Ireland, will always be a part of it.’
Announcing his retirement Simon said: “I’m extremely grateful for this incredible journey that I have been able to live for the last 10+ years. It has given me some of the greatest times of my life and memories that I will never forget. I’d like to say a massive thank you to anyone and everyone in Irish tennis who have supported me throughout the years, it was fun”.
On his Instagram post announcing his retirement Simon mentioned the support of his family throughout his career: “None of which would have been possible without my family’s unwavering support throughout the countless highs and lows we experienced together.”.
